Trial dates are set for a Red Earth Cree Nation man who was the subject of a manhunt early last year and was later charged with second-degree murder.
Caleb Head, 25, was taken into custody last April, days after police issued a warrant for his arrest for the attempted murder of Alyssa Nawakayas.
Nawakayas, 22, had been airlifted to Saskatoon hospital in critical condition after RCMP responded to a reported assault, with the victim found outside a home on the reserve. Nawakayas died in hospital 10 days later and Head’s charges were upgraded from attempted murder to murder.
The two had previously been in a relationship, it’s not known if they were in a relationship at the time. Nawakayas was a mother of two.
Head has been in custody since then and been through a number of pre-trial dates in Melfort.
Now, he is set to go to trial by judge alone in January of 2018. His two-week trial starts in the middle of the month.
