A new cougar and black bear trapping season will open in Saskatchewan this fall.

Environment minister Scott Moe says both cougar and bear populations have been expanding into the southern portion of the province and the additional trapping season will help manage the growing populations.

The cougar trapping season will open October 15 and close on March 31. The black bear season will run from September 10 until May 3. The bear trapping season in the northern fur conservation area will run until June 30.

The bear trapping season in the northern fur conservation area (NFCA) has been extended.

Saskatchewan Trapper’s Association President Mike Keen welcomes the move, saying it will curb increasing bear and cougar populations, improve public safety and provide trappers with additional harvesting opportunities.
