A treaty status Indian has had his acquittal on illegal hunting charges overturned by a Court of Queen’s Bench judge in Swift Current.

On September 30, Kristjen Pierone, shot a bull moose on a piece of property near Swift Current. At issue was the use of the land. Status Indians are allowed to hunt out of season and on crown land, or on private land if the land is not posted and is not being used for purposes such as agriculture.

The Queen ’s Bench judge ruled, the land failed to meet that test. He says the moose was shot near a stubble field, and it was clear the area was farmland. Pierone’s lawyer has 30 days to file an appeal.

The decision in this case was posted last month.
