A date has finally been set for a by-election to fill the much contested position of chief on the George Gordon First Nation, which is located northeast of Regina.

The election has been the subject of several court challenges, with the Court of Appeal ultimately ruling the results of the March 2016 election for chief were invalid because of missing ballots that could have changed the outcome.

Last October, a lower court ruling threw out the results of the entire election over missing ballots, but the Court of Appeal ruled the band election can stand, but the election for chief had to be redone.

The by-election for chief will be held September 13. A nomination meeting is scheduled for August 9.

At the same time, a by-election will be held to fill a position on the band council that has been vacant for almost a year.
