Officials at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary near Prince Albert are investigating the death of an inmate early this morning.
Daniel James Tokarchuck died in custody after being taken to Victoria Hospital but officials aren’t releasing the reasons surrounding his death. He was pronounced dead at 4:24 am.
Tokarchuk had been serving time for second-degree murder and other charges of mischief related to property and failure to comply with an appearance notice since December of 2004.
In a prepared release, Correctional Service Canada says as in all cases of a death of an inmate, police and the coroner’s office have been notified — but no other details have been released.
CSC says it will be reviewing the circumstances of the incident.
