Wet weather and bad roads forced the closure of the school on James Smith Cree Nation today.

Chief Wally Burns says the main road that usually brings in students from the south end of the reserve was “pretty darn bad”, and that buses would have a hard time getting through.

Burns says a couple of houses might be cut off from the main road if they have to shut it down until it stops raining and dries up.

He notes the Coxby Grid that travels east and west through the community was in rough shape, as well.

Burns adds that as the day goes on and it continues to rain, things will go from bad to worse.

Environment Canada is saying that the rain should end later today and the rest of the week will see more sun than clouds.

In April, a state of emergency was declared on the First Nation and some residents were evacuated to Melfort when spring flooding made some roads impassable and threatened drinking water supplies to a large part of the reserve.
