Two separate trials have been set for the males accused of killing a Red Earth Cree Nation man in 2016.

Dion Head, 42, was found dead in his home by Mounties that July after they received a report that a man had been injured.

A youth, who just turned 18, and Ernest McKay, 22, were arrested the same day. They were charged with murder and robbery in connection with Head’s death.

A large contingent of family members attended the first court appearance for McKay and the youth, lining the hallway of Melfort Provincial Court as many cried.

At that time Charlene Head, Dion’s aunt, said all three males were related. Dion was a quiet, friendly man who kept to himself, Charlene said.

She called for more efforts to deal with social issues around drug and alcohol addiction on Red Earth, saying healing is needed for all those involved.

McKay goes to trial in September, and the youth will be tried the following month.

Both have chosen to be tried by jury at Melfort Court of Queen’s Bench.
