A guilty plea has been entered for the July 2016 killing of a Sandy Bay man.

The manslaughter plea by 20-year-old Brett Napoleon Michel was entered in April, in relation to Jorden Bedard’s death after a house party in Pelican Narrows on July 9, 2016.

Bedard, 19, was rushed to clinic that night, but attempts to resuscitate were unsuccessful.

Michel was arrested five days later and charged with second-degree murder. His April plea was to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

The family of the victim has remained united at Michel’s past court appearances. Early on in proceedings they traveled the 400 kilometres to a Prince Albert court date, wearing red shirts with the name “Jordan” written across the arm.

Bedard is remembered by people from across the province’s north-east as a kind, respectful and happy young man.

His mother Pauline Bedard said Jordan was one of four boys she raised as a single mom, and one of her favourite pictures of her son was taken on her 40th birthday after Jordan and his young brother had a cake specially made for her.

“We miss Jordan so much,” she wrote in a message to MBC, adding that the pain has not eased since his death.

“He was such a kind spirit nice to everyone he met, treated everyone with respect. So many stories I can share about my son. I don’t want him to be forgotten.”

Michel has been in custody since his arrest, and his sentencing is scheduled for September in Pelican Narrows.
