Candidates running for mayor of Saskatoon will get an opportunity to engage Indigenous voters at a forum Wednesday night.

The FSIN is hosting the mayoral candidates in a discussion on issues facing the city’s Indigenous community.

“We at the FSIN are pushing for more improvement and investment in First Nations, anything that will improve the quality of life for our people living in the city,” says FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron.

Chief Cameron says the Indigenous community pays taxes and should have a say in how the resource revenue in Saskatoon is being handed out.

While the FSIN Chief feels Indigenous issues have not taken centre stage during this civic election, he is hoping this forum will help change that.

“From 40 to 80 per cent of our Indigenous population lives in the province’s towns and cities, that’s a huge number,” he says. “We are all here together, none of us are going anywhere.”

Cameron believes, with the proper turnout, the Indigenous vote can have a big impact on the civic election.

“Votes matter, that’s where the power is at. When the candidates realize this they are going to be more open to ideas and partnerships.”

So far incumbent Don Atchison, Charlie Clark and Kelly Moore have confirmed their attendance at the forum. Devin Hein is the only candidate who has not confirmed if he will be there.

The forum gets underway at 7:00 pm at the Travelodge.
