A convicted murderer is back in custody at the Prince Albert Penitentiary after being on the loose for four days.
Roger Joseph Gillet, 64, was spotted around 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday on the outskirts of Prince Albert and apprehended without incident after a call was made to the RCMP, confirmed Correctional Services Canada Jeff Campbell. He did not have details on the exact area where the arrest took place.
“We’re keen to get anybody back who’s unlawfully at large,” Campbell said.
Campbell says CSC will cooperate with any police and courts if any charges stem from Gillet being unlawfully at large. There’s no word yet on any new charges.
Gillet had previously been in the minimum security unit, which is not fenced. There’s no indication of whether that will change or not.
When asked if extra measures are being taken to make sure Gillet is not a flight risk again, Campbell said he can’t speak to specific cases but said it might be a consideration for the institution.
Gillet is serving an indeterminate sentence – which lawyers say essentially means life in prison – for murder, forcible confinement, and a previous escape.
RCMP did not share the condition Gillet was in when arrested.
