The jury at an inquest into the overdose death of a Saskatchewan Aboriginal woman in police cells is recommending better surveillance and more training for officers to prevent a similar tragedy in the future.

Adele Jennifer Morin, 39, was found dead in her cell at the Sandy Bay RCMP detachment in October, 2014.

She had been arrested for public intoxication and creating a disturbance. The cause of death was drug and alcohol overdose.

The jury at the Creighton coroner’s inquest made nine recommendations.

They include extra cameras and better lighting in secure areas, more training for guards and RCMP to recognize overdose symptoms, more treatment programs in the community and consideration of making Sandy Bay a dry community.

It also recommends the RCMP make no assumptions and if a person appears to be unconscious seek immediate medical help.
