The nomination period for municipal elections has passed in northern Saskatchewan, and now some interesting mayoral races are shaping up.
In Ile-a-la-Crosse, well-known Metis Nation of Saskatchewan representative Louis Gardiner is facing off against incumbent mayor Duane Favel.
La Ronge has two names looking to replace Thomas Sierzycki, who’s not running again. One is former mayor Joseph Hordyski and running against him is the Friendship Centre’s executive director Ron Woytowich.
Nearby Air Ronge will see Bruce Robertson try to unseat longtime mayor Gord Stomp.
In Green Lake, Ric Richardson wants to keep his spot as mayor, with Phane Ray running against him.
Denare Beach’s mayor Carl Lentowicz has Paul Trottier seeking to get more votes.
Weyakwin incumbent mayor Stella Brown has competition with George Brown.
Although there are a lot of two-people races for mayor, there are a few exceptions.
The biggest exception is Sandy Bay, with six people running.
Current mayor Daniel M. Bear has competition with Tracey R. Merasty, Stanley B. Merasty, Paul R. Morin, Linda McKay, and Timothy Underwood.
As previously reported, there are four mayoral candidates in La Loche.
Buffalo Narrows mayor Estelle Laliberte is not in the race this time around. Sandy Ericson, Candice Waite-Evans, and Robert Woods are in the running to replace her.
In Turnor Lake, retired correctional worker Rene Desjarlais and teacher Kelly Kwan are looking to unseat current mayor Paul Montgrand.
The town of Creighton has already acclaimed its mayor, Bruce Fiddler, after no opponents stepped up.
As previously reported, Beauval has acclaimed newcomer Nick Daigneault.
Elections in all these communities are on Oct. 26, except for La Loche which has its elections on Oct. 5.
