For the first time in nearly 20 years, the Louis Riel Relay returns to Saskatchewan.

This weekend, Batoche will be the host of the 2016 edition of the event.

The relay was a staple in the province in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

Event planner Carissa Robb says the response to the resurrection of the relay has been nothing but positive.

“People are excited about it. It is bringing back memories of the relay and the way it was a few decades ago,” said Robb. “People are excited to come out to Batoche and to partake in this race again. It is going to be such a great weekend.”

Teams of six will compete in a race of several different events including archery, running, biking, hiking, canoeing and horseback riding.

New this year is an individual adventure race that will incorporate all events for a single competitor.

The Louis Riel Relay Days will also feature a five-kilometre fun run, a pie eating contest, bannock making and other traditional Metis activities.

The event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
