A long-awaited Metis Nation Legislative Assembly will happen in Yorkton next month — because a majority of the Provincial Metis Council voted to pass that resolution.

That’s the word from Ernst & Young, which has been appointed as an “expert advisor” to the MN-S.

MN-S president Robert Doucette previously voted against holding the event in Yorkton.

But Ernst & Young’s Evan Shoforost says the MN-S Constitution does not require a unanimous decision from the council about such matters.

“The resolution occurred quite a long time ago, but finally the federal funding has come through and so this is a go and the Legislative Assembly of the MN-S will go ahead in Yorkton on the date specified,” said Shoforost.

President Doucette recently signed an agreement that will release federal funds for a legislative assembly to take place on July 30 and 31.

Shoforost adds the federal funding covers travel costs for delegates to attend the assembly.

Ernst & Young is helping with preparations for next month’s assembly. The firm is asking all Metis locals in the province to mail it the names of their president and vice-president — with supporting documentation — to assist with delegate registration.
