The Chief of Onion Lake says he hadn’t planned on running in the upcoming June election, but is accepting his nomination.
Chief Wallace Fox’s name is one of the six put forward for nomination as chief so far.
At a summit in Prince Albert on Wednesday, MBC was able to confirm Fox’s stance on his nomination.
“My name is going to be on the ballot on June 17th for election in our community,” Fox said. “If people decide to vote for me that’s fine. It’s entirely up to them.”
Fox says if he wins, he’ll stay on as chief and “fight for treaty rights.”
Chief Fox had an eventful run as chief in recent years: he’s been a main opponent to the federal First nations Financial Transparency Act; joined a class-action lawsuit against the government over oil resources; and he’s also facing allegations of domestic abuse.
As of earlier this week other names running for chief include Joe Carter, Roy Wayne Littlewolfe, Thomas Chief, F. Sylvia Carter and Teresa Wolfe.
The election will be held at the Onion Lake Communiplex Hall on Friday, June 17.
