A man has been sentenced by a Prince Albert court to 16 months for uttering death threats and assaulting his former girlfriend.

Raymond Knife, 34, has been in prison since August of last year.

Police arrested him after his partner at the time fled the apartment they’d been staying in for about a week.  The victim made a hysterical call to police from a nearby clinic, saying she’d been chased by Knife and two others who had been carrying machetes. The chase was never proven at trial.

At trial, court heard that last summer Knife and the victim – who was pregnant at the time – traveled to Prince Albert with plans to sell crystal meth.

During that time, the victim had been doing crystal met, and Knife had become increasingly violent and threatening.

Conflict arose when the victim wanted to go back to Saskatoon, and when Knife found out she had been communicating with a former partner.

Not only did Knife push the woman down to take money and her phone away, but he threatened to cut her head off with a machete.

During the trial, the victim said she took the threat seriously because she knew what Knife was capable of. In fact she testified that the first time she was frightened of Knife was after she told him she was going to go to the police to tell them about separate crimes.

The victim was seeking restitution, but instead, the court ordered Knife to serve an extra 10 days.

With credit for time served, he’ll still be in jail for a little over six months.
