Leaders in the northern community of Cumberland House were pleased to see their Market Garden get selected for an award.
The market garden, which provides fresh fruits and vegetables to the northern community, received a Regional Centre of Expertise sustainability award last week.
The RCE recognized 27 different projects at its Education for Sustainable Development Recognition Awards last Wednesday.
The awards were given to projects the RCE feels help make Saskatchewan a more sustainable place to live and work.
Among the projects honoured was the Cumberland House Market Garden.
Cumberland House Mayor Valerie Deschambeault says she was happy to see their community garden get recognized.
She says they originally developed the project to off-set the high cost of food in their northern community.
“We grow our own fruits and vegetables and we are able to produce four times the crop that a traditional farmer would,” says Deschambeault.
Given the success of their own market garden Deschambeault is now encouraging other northern communities to invest and develop in similar projects.
