A few Weyakwin residents’ good deed of the day may have prevented a wide spread fire near La Ronge.

Irene Leach and a few friends were travelling home from La Ronge after a day of grocery shopping.

Just south of town they spotted smoke in the ditch near the sawmill.

“I thought it may have been a controlled grass fire, but when I saw that no one was around I figured the fire needed to be put out,” said Leach.

The three ladies immediately pulled over and poured a bottle of water over the biggest flames and then stomped out the rest.

“I showed my friends how to do the Red River Jig on those flames,” said Leach.

After the ladies continued their journey home the La Ronge Fire Department went in to check out the damage.

They say they found a 6 feet by 3 feet burn in the ditch and put some more water on it for good measure.

However, the fire department did say they found a cigarette butt in the middle of the burn.

While they can’t prove that the burn was caused by the cigarette they are asking residents to not throw lit cigarettes out of a moving vehicle.

MBC caught up with Irene Leach after she returned to Weyakwin.

After recounted her story, she concluded saying it just felt good to get in a good deed for the day.
