A new program at the University of Saskatchewan is aiming to bring more Aboriginal staff to campus.
The university officially launched the Aboriginal Career Start program on Tuesday afternoon.
The ACS program will provide paid training and immersive workplace experience for students from different First Nation and Metis post-secondary institutions.
Sixteen students from Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology and Gabriel Dumont Institute will receive on-the-job training in different university departments like financial services and human resources.
University of Saskatchewan President Peter Stoicheff says the program is one of the many ways the university is responded to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action.
“The university has aimed to be the best place we can be for First Nation students,” says Stoicheff. “This is the time to be purposeful to help the success of First Nation students on this campus.”
The program is expected to cost $50,000 for every year it runs and Stoicheff says he hopes the program will grow in the future.
