An appeal of sorts has been filed in one of the harshest penalties ever handed down for second-degree murder in the province.

Tammy Lynn Goforth was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for at least 17 years for the starvation death of a four-year-old child who was under her care.

Her husband Kevin Goforth got 15 years for manslaughter. It was also one of the harshest penalties ever handed down for manslaughter.

The pair was sentenced earlier this month.

Tammy Lynn Goforth filed a simple hand-written notice to the Court of Appeal asking that both her sentence and conviction be overturned and a new trial ordered.

Her lawyer Jeff Deagle has been unavailable for comment.
