EDMONTON – RCMP have identified a central Alberta man accused of killing two Onion Lake Cree Nation women whose bodies were found several years ago.

Gordon Alfred Rogers, who is 59 and from Red Deer, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

The body of Jeannette Jean Chief, who was 48, was found in June 2007 in a river near Lloydminster. She had last been seen in Lloydminster four days earlier.

Violet Marie Heathen, who was 49, was last seen in the same city in May 2009. Six months later, a hunter found her remains in a rural area near Kitscoty, AB.

Police say Rogers had a “weak” relationship with Heathen, but did not know Chief.

Investigators from both Saskatchewan and Alberta were involved in Rogers’ arrest. He was located in Edmonton.

In a news release, the RCMP says Rogers had been a person of interest in both Chief and Heathen’s missing person’s files.

Rogers is scheduled to appear in Lloydminster court on Tuesday, April 5.
