There is no guarantee that full semi loads of supplies will ever be able to cross the ice road to Wollaston Lake this year.

That is the word from local leaders.

They are saying that could create supply issues in the far north that could last a year.

Building the ice road has been a major challenge this year due to weather conditions and thin ice.

Hatchet Lake Development CEO Anne Robillard says the ice situation is being assessed today.

“We have the Ministry of Highways checking the ice with their radar,” she says. “And that will help us determine when they will open it up officially, but only to a limited weight capacity.”

Robillard adds the community of Wollaston Lake ran out of fuel last week.

Light vehicles have been using the road for some time.

The community has been bringing supplies in by pick-up truck, including fuel.
