First Nations have a bright future when it comes to solar energy, according to a panellist at Friday’s discussion at the University of Saskatchewan.

First Nations Power Authority’s Ian Loughran made the comments at the University of Saskatchewan’s panel discussion on renewable energy.

The discussion is in response to the provincial government’s target to achieve 50 per cent renewable energy by the year 2030.

Loughran says with recent changes to Saskatchewan’s energy policy there will be plenty of solar energy opportunities for First Nations.

“As of late the low cost of solar, solar energy is changing fast, fast. So the next decade ahead I think we’re going to see most of the opportunities come up in solar,” said Loughran.

“But really I think where the main opportunities where First Nations are is on reserve, roof top solar, energy efficient buildings.”
