The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is calling on the federal government to declare December 14 as Indian Residential School Memorial Day.

Earlier this week, Justice Murray Sinclair delivered the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s final report about the investigation into Canada’s Indian residential school system.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a commitment to implement the TRC’s 94 recommendations.

In a release, the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations says December 14, 2015 is the day residential school abuse was truly and finally acknowledged.

Vice Chief Kimberly Jonathan says if the TRC’s 94 recommendations are fulfilled, First Nations would lead healthier lives.

She says the FSIN is calling on the federal government to declare December 14 as Indian Residential School Memorial Day.
