More than a hundred people staged a protest rally in front of the legislative building Tuesday afternoon in support of Syrian refugees.

They were carrying signs that read, “tear down the wall” and “refugees welcome.”

The event was organized quickly in response to Premier Brad Wall’s suggestion that the federal government back off on its plan to bring in 25,000 refugees by the end of the year.

Protest organizer, Rebecca Granovsky-Larsen, says the premier is over-reacting to the security threat.

“There is no way that we can’t bring them in on the proposed current timeline,” she says. “Security experts are saying it is totally feasible to do this and I think there has been a lot of hysteria generated after the Paris bombings.”

Premier Wall says he supports the refugee program, but does not support an arbitrary timeline and an arbitrary number. He is urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reconsider.

The premier has written the prime minister a letter to that effect.
