On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau handed out mandate letters providing his cabinet members with direction and orders for their new portfolios.

The theme of the letter for the Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, Carolyn Bennett, is to build a nation-to-nation relationship between Canada and indigenous peoples.

The Prime Minister wants his minister to make real progress on issues like housing, employment, health and mental health care, community safety and policing, child welfare and education.

The top priorities for Bennett include supporting reconciliation by starting with the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and establishing an inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women.

In all, there are 13 points in the letter that promise change in the relationship between Canada and indigenous peoples.
