This month, a Prince Albert inmate entered a guilty plea to assault and requested a penitentiary sentence before telling a judge, “I just want to get this thing over with.”

Alfred Horace Young, 34, was serving time in a provincial facility when he attacked a fellow prisoner in August.

In Prince Albert Provincial Court on Sept. 15, the Crown prosecutor described the facts of the case. Video surveillance within Prince Albert Correctional Centre (PACC) showed Young smashing the head of the victim, Kiefler Linklater, against a wall in late August.

The two carried on with the fight in the bathroom.

There was a size mismatch between the two – Young is strikingly tall and has a heavy build – that showed itself in the extent of injuries.

In the video, Young exited the bathroom holding his chin as if he’d been punched. Guards found Linklater in the bathroom later, and he needed seven stitches.

When Young arrived in court in mid-September, he was ready to plead guilty and receive his sentence.

He represented himself, and shrugged when asked how he responded to the Crown’s facts, saying “well, I did it.”

Young also said “I’m not here to kiss ***.”

The Crown suggested a sentence of no less than two years for Young, whose criminal history includes prior assaults.

Young said he might as well get two years plus a day so he can be transferred to the federal penitentiary.

Speaking of PACC, he told the judge “I don’t want to back to that ****hole” but didn’t provide details on why.

“I just want to get this thing over with. I don’t like coming here, man,” Young said in court. He shifted his weight uncomfortably in the prisoner’s box. His comments were peppered with expletives.

That request was honoured as Young received a two-year sentence with a special note that he’s to serve that time in the penitentiary.

He also received a $200 surcharge.
