The Saskatoon Tribal Council and Saskatoon Police Service are inviting the public to attend an open discussion tonight on a monument dedicated to missing and murdered Indigenous women.
The two organizations say community input is encouraged regarding the memorial art piece that will be located at the new police headquarters.
The purpose of the event is for the public to have a discussion with three of the potential artists for the project. The input is expected to help organizers choose the right artist for the memorial.
Monica Goulet, an Aboriginal relations consultant with the Saskatoon police, says building the monument at the new headquarters is the right decision.
“It would then be seen as a gathering place and a place of reflection,” says Goulet. “It will also send a very prominent message to the community that we support ending violence against Aboriginal women.”
Goulet says Saskatoon Police Chief Clive Weighill has been planning the monument for the past five years.
The discussion will take place from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the community room at SPS headquarters. Organizers say soup and bannock will be served.
