A First Nation in New Brunswick has become the first one in Canada to opt in to the new First Nations Election Act.

It is voluntary, and sets up four-year terms of office as well as fixed election dates.  There is no role for the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs to receive or investigate election appeals.

The act also sets out clear criteria on the eligibility of candidates for chief.

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt congratulates the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation on its decision. He says it will lead to increased economic development and job creation.

First Nations can still hold their elections under the provisions of the old Indian Act, or under their own custom election code.
