A school on a Saskatchewan First Nation is reopening a month after vandals trashed it.

Yellow Quill First Nation closed the school last month after vandals smashed door and windows and set off fire extinguishers, leaving a huge mess.

Chief John Machiskinic said the damage was about $200,000 and insurance covered the repairs and cleanup.

The chief said during the closure, students in Grades 1 to 5 were bused to nearby Rose Valley to resume classes, while others attended class at a hall and a local clinic.

Machiskinic said the Saskatoon Tribal Council assisted in getting every student looked after.

The school is set to open Monday, and the band council says they may extend the school year a couple of weeks to make up for any lost time.
