The Saskatchewan Coalition Against Racism is speaking out against a recent Supreme Court decision to deny an Aboriginal man leave to appeal his dangerous offender designation.

Andy Peekeekoot was declared a dangerous offender in 2010 after he pulled a knife during a bar fight.

SCAR spokesperson, Bob Hughes, says he is ‘sickened’ by what has been allowed to pass for justice in this case.

“We have been working on this case for a long time and it has always been obvious to us that in any normal system it would have been overturned,” said Hughes.

Hughes says this Peekeekoot ruling needs to be overturned.

“His case is something that doesn’t have any relation to justice at all,” said Hughes.  “If I was in Andy’s place right now I would find it frightening.”

Hughes says they are now working on an article detailing the circumstances around the story.

“As people see the truth about this case there will be more widespread outrage and it will give people cause to question what justice in this province is.”

The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal ruled there were no significant errors in how the sentencing judge came to his decision in the case and unanimously upheld the ruling.

Peekeekoot is currently serving his sentence at a medium security jail in Grand Cache, Alberta.
