Monica Burns’ body was found murdered northwest of Prince Albert earlier this year.
On Monday afternoon, her family and friends took to the streets to honour their deceased loved one.
Over 50 people joined Monica’s family in a walk to honour her memory as well as the memory of all missing and murdered Indigenous women.
Signs of ‘Justice for Monica’ and ‘Am I Next’ filled the gathering of concerned citizens.
Monica’s family says they organized the walk to give Monica a voice.
“She’s not here and we want to make sure justice is heard because she can’t speak for herself now,” said Kavia Burns, Monica’s step mom. “We just want to let the public know she was loved…she was a daughter, a sister, an aunt and we loved her…she was a person.”
“We want to make sure justice is given for Monica because she can’t speak for herself,” Echoed Sara Carriere-Burns, Monica’s sister.
The congregation began their walk at Prince Albert City Hall and walked up the hill to the Court of Queen’s Bench where Todd McKeaveny, the accused in Monica’s murder, is scheduled for a bail hearing Tuesday afternoon.
