Organizers of a missing and murdered Aboriginal women symposium in Regina hope to continue the discussion on the issue.

The symposium has been running this week at the University of Regina and has featured several panels from experts and students.

Dr. Shauneen Pete, the Executive Lead of Indigenization for the university, says there is a lot of attention on the issue even though the federal government continues to refuse to hold a national inquiry.

“What we see is community activists and others stepping up, holding a variety of teach-ins and lectures and conferences and things like that just to keep the attention on the topics.”

Pete says the symposium is aiming to discover the “sociological” issues around missing and murdered Aboriginal women.

Last year, the Prime Minister remarked that the issue wasn’t a “sociological phenomenon”.
