The Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race kicked off today in Prince Albert.

The race officially got underway shortly after noon with each sled team taking off every two minutes.

The first leg of the race sees the teams arrive in Anglin Lake.

By late afternoon Tuesday, five teams had made it to that checkpoint — Laura Neese, Rick Wannamaker, Gerry Walker, Stefaan de Marie and Laquasha Laviolette had been tagged.

The rest will be coming in late this afternoon and early this evening.

There are both eight-dog teams and 12-dog teams taking part.

The eight-dog teams will finish in La Ronge on Thursday or Friday, while the 12-dog teams will be doing a loop that includes Grandmother’s Bay and Stanley Mission before heading back to La Ronge for the finish this weekend.

You can track the progress of the mushers online at canadianchallenge.com or on the “Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race” Facebook page.
