February is Aboriginal Storytelling Month to honour the oral history of First Nations culture.

Aboriginal storytellers are holding several events this week in Saskatchewan to share that history.

Storyteller John A. McDonald says Aboriginal stories, like many other traditional cultural practices, get passed on from generation to generation.

“They were our way of explaining how things happened and it was our way of answering the questions we already had,” said McDonald.

However, McDonald says Aboriginal storytelling has become a dying practice because people have become too dependent on technology.

“So the process of listening to someone share a story and their experiences is a dying art,” said the storyteller.  “It’s a positive thing to sit around and listen to those stories because there are very few people left who can tell a good story.”

McDonald and other storytellers will be in Prince Albert on Tuesday sharing their stories.

The event will take place at the Bison Café from 7-9 pm.

Similar events will be taking place in Saskatoon and Regina.
