Battlefords RCMP have laid several charges after a standoff with a distraught man yesterday.
Twenty-four-year-old Gabriel Poundmaker is facing several charges — including pointing a firearm, two counts of possession of a weapon with the purpose of danger to the public peace, one count of flight from a peace officer while operating a motor vehicle, Possession of a Weapon while Prohibited, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Failing to Comply with Probation.
Poundmaker had previously been sought by police after allegedly pointing a firearm at three Mounties from a vehicle during a high-speed pursuit last week.
He is facing several charges in relation to that incident as well including Point a Firearm, Possession of a Weapon, Dangerous Driving, Failing to Stop for Police and Failing to comply with Probation.
The incident yesterday lasted about seven hours and involved more than a dozen emergency vehicles, including an armoured car.
RCMP members wearing tactical gear were at the scene as other officers blocked the roads surrounding the house in the 1400 block of 111th Avenue.
Residents in the area were told to lock their doors while others couldn’t return home until the standoff ended.
Nearby, St. Mary’s Community School was placed on lockdown, then evacuated in the early afternoon.
Poundmaker appeared in North Battleford Provincial court today and has had all his matters adjourned until Thursday January 29th.
He remains in custody.
