Nineteen kids at a Prince Albert elementary school were given positive tickets Wednesday afternoon by city police.
The St. Anne students were given the tickets for being a part of the school’s Peacekeeping Program.
“Teachers sometimes need help around the playground because there is often incidents where the students don’t want to go to the teachers, so the peacekeepers are there to help solve the problem,” Grade 8 student and former peacekeeper Tessa Koeberlin says.
The peacekeepers are made up of volunteers from Grades 5 and 6.
Police Chief Troy Cooper handed out the positive tickets as well as gift certificates to the movies and tickets to a Prince Albert Raiders game.
While speaking to the students, Chief Cooper reminded everyone that the police are a service designed to help people and the kids in the peacekeeping program are doing the same thing.
Koeberlin says the positive tickets help remind kids to be confident in the peacekeeping program.
She also says it helps kids see the police as less intimidating.
“I feel like we might be doing something bad when they come up, but I often see them smiling and I realize they aren’t too bad.”
The city’s positive ticketing campaign aims to reward kids for doing good things in the community.
