There was a cheque presentation made this morning at MBC’s headquarters in La Ronge.

Saskatchewan’s Aboriginal Radio Network is once again receiving over $318,000 from Heritage Canada towards providing Cree and Dene language programming.

MBC is one of several Aboriginal communications societies that have to apply for a federal grant every year — but Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River MP Rob Clarke would like to see that changed.

“I would like to see this, more or less, come out as core funding each year. That way, the application process won’t be so lengthy — and that’s what I’m hoping for. I have to talk to my minister on that aspect, and also with the parliamentary secretary. And to roll out constant funding would probably alleviate a lot of the problems or unforeseen hiccups that could come down the line in the years to come.”

MBC provides 10 hours of both Cree and Dene language programming each week.

The funding is provided through the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Aboriginal Peoples’ Program, which, among other things, supports the preservation and revitalization of Aboriginal languages and cultures.
