A vigil for missing and murdered Aboriginal women will be held at the First Nations University in Regina on Saturday.

Vigil organizer Jaqueline Anaquod says the goal is to honour the families of women and girls who have been lost to violence or disappeared.

Anaquod says she has lost both a cousin and aunt to violence and Aboriginal women are at risk.

“The reality is our Indigenous women across Canada are targets. You know I have a teenaged daughter and every time she walks out that door it’s traumatizing for me as a parent,” she says.

The gathering will begin with a traditional pipe ceremony at 4 p.m. with a vigil and a round dance to follow.

Anaquod says the event is about healing and moving forward and not another call for a national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women.

The Regina event is part of a national day of recognition.

More than 21 cities across the country are holding similar events.
