A First Nations energy company is part of a new project that will bring solar energy to southwestern Saskatchewan.

The First Nations Power Authority has teamed up with Lockheed Martin in a demonstration project that will provide solar energy to Home Inn & Suites in Swift Current.

The project will provide about 26,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy per year.

The endeavour is the province’s first strategic off-grid and renewables demonstration project.

The project will also reduce local carbon emissions by 21 metric tones per year.

It is specially designed to be able to withstand strong prairie winds.

Other partners in the solar power demonstration project include File Hills Qu’Appelle Developments, the City of Swift Current and the federal and provincial governments.
