The Flying Dust First Nation has partnered with Habitat For Humanity to build a 10-unit elders complex in the community.
The First Nation will be managing the facility while volunteers from Habitat will help them form committees, raise money and build the complex.
Flying Dust Chief Robert Mirasty says the project will provide a suitable living environment for elders while freeing up other houses which can then be used by young families.
He says the construction phase will also utilize band members.
“We build capacity so our young people are being trained in the skills trades,” he says. “We nurture their natural skills to build our own homes in our communities and have some pride in our workmanship and encourage home ownership.”
The total cost of the project will be about $1.4 million and Flying Dust will raise about half of that amount.
