The provincial government has announced a new wolf hunt pilot project which begins on Monday in the east-central part of the province.

It will run until the end of March in Wildlife Management Zone 49 — which runs south along the forest from Carrot River to Greenwater Lake Provincial Park, then east along the forest to Hudson Bay.

Environment Minister Scott Moe says wolves moving into the area are causing problems for cattle producers.

“The pilot program has been spurred by complaints from producers in the area on predation kills on their livestock. And that’s been supported by Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation that has reported an usually high number of livestock predation claims in that area.”

There will be 100 licences available, each good for two wolves, at Saskatchewan Environment offices in Nipawin, Hudson Bay and Greenwater Lake Provincial Park.
