An investigating officer says a man shot dead by police officers in Prince Albert last summer was shot at point-blank range.

Sgt. Shawn Stubbs testified at an inquest this morning that due to gun residue found on Ryan Natomagan-Nelson’s shirt, they can determine one of the shots was fired within 42 inches.

Stubbs also said the use of a firearm was an appropriate weapon in the situation.

Natomagan-Nelson was fatally shot in an altercation with Prince Albert police in July 2013.

An inquest into his death is taking place in the city this week.

A coroner’s jury has been hearing the circumstances around Natomagan-Nelson’s death in order to make recommendations to help prevent similar deaths in the future.
