A new housing project for NORTEP students, funded by the provincial and federal governments, was officially opened in La Ronge today.

The project includes six four-bedroom units, and two five-bedroom units, with an estimated building cost of $2.74 million.

Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River MP Rob Clarke was there for the ceremony and says having quality housing makes a difference for students.

“The Northern Teacher Education Program facilitates access to teachers’ education and certification for northerners — particularly those of Aboriginal ancestry. Students come to La Ronge from across northern Saskatchewan and the availability of safe, secure and suitable housing for these aspiring teachers and their families greatly increases their chances of academic success.”

The student housing project is located north of the Kikinahk Friendship Centre on Louis Road in La Ronge.
