Opposing sides in a Sturgeon Lake First Nation election dispute met in a Saskatoon courtroom Wednesday.

Supporters of Henry Felix say he won a March 2013 vote for chief fair and square.

However, local electoral officials disqualified Felix claiming he owes money to the band and instead are recognizing Craig Bighead as chief.

A. J. Felix says the accusations against his brother are baseless.

“Nobody’s given him an invoice to pay, the court hasn’t and the band hasn’t, they haven’t given him an invoice,” he says. “So, who does he pay? If you’re going to charge him that he owes money to the process, who does he pay, please tell us, he’s got the money.”

A. J. Felix adds it is unfortunate the matter has ended up in court but they feel they have little recourse.

“The electoral officer made a decision that he was going to disqualify a person before even approaching the appeal process which we have. We have an appeal process, we could have used that appeal process and let the process conduct itself in a manner that is written in our election code.”

Justice Catherine Kane has reserved her decision in the matter.
