The head of the Indian Residential Schools Adjudication Secretariat says he is pleased with a new Ontario court decision.
The province’s Superior Court has ruled that testimonies received from residential school survivors should be destroyed after 15 years.
During this same time period, the claimant will have the option of having their testimonies preserved in a national archive.
Chief Adjudicator Dan Shapiro issued a statement today in support of the decision.
During the hearing into the matter, a lawyer for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission argued against destruction of the documents.
The 15-year period will not begin until all remaining hearings with residential school survivors are complete.
