A Cree elder from northern Saskatchewan will begin a 400-kilometre walk tomorrow in an effort to get a national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women.

Emil Bell might be best known for going on a hunger strike last year in support of Attawapiskat First Nation Chief Theresa Spence and the Idle No More movement.

The Canoe Lake Cree Nation man will be walking from Beauval to Saskatoon.

He says the recent murder of a Winnipeg teen was the tipping point.

“When I saw the picture of that young lady, Tina Fontaine, it just triggered off something in me.  I wanted to do something and I said, ‘Well, I can’t just sit around and think about it’.”

Bell will be carrying a petition calling on the government to hold a national inquiry.
