A construction firm has been fined for unauthorized alteration to a riverbank shoreline in northern Saskatchewan.

Cando Contracting has been fined $12,600 for altering the shoreline on the Chitek River near Meadow Lake.

The Chitek River provides drinking water to the community and conservation officers found that the alteration was leaking creosote into the river.

The firm was convicted in July under the Environmental Management and Protection Act and will now have to pay the fine.

In addition to the fine, Cando will have to reclaim the site in accordance with a remediation plan.
