Twelve kids from northern Saskatchewan had a chance to learn golf from the pros on Sunday morning in Saskatoon.

The kids, ranging in age from 11-14, were flown into Saskatoon from Pinehouse for the day by uranium mining company Cameco.

Cameco manager of community investment Jonathan Huntington says the event was a great opportunity for the northern youth to learn tips from PGA Tour Canada golfers while having fun at the same time.

“It’s a chance for these youth to interact with positive role models from the PGA Tour of Canada,” he says. “We’ve brought pros out from the PGA Tour of Canada to mix with these youth to have a fun tournament today.”

Huntington adds that if the event encourages some of the youth to pursue golf at a higher level, that is yet another positive.

Tyler Ostrovsky, one of the pros on hand, says golf can be a difficult game to master and they try not to get too serious when introducing the sport to young people.

“The main thing is just to have fun,” he says. “You don’t want to get them too caught up in what’s going on and how the game’s going but fundamentals and just having fun.”

However, Ostrovsky say one of the first things they try to show people who are new to the game is how to grip the golf club properly.

The PGA Tour Canada players were in Saskatoon to take part in the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open.

The event took place at the Silverwood Golf Course.
