This is the day that the salaries of First Nations chiefs and band councillors begin to be posted online.

In fact, Ottawa has already starting posting this information on its Aboriginal Affairs website.

Band financial statements are also available online.

Today is the deadline for bands to comply under Ottawa’s First Nations Financial Transparency Act.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is expressing “jubilation” today.

The federation began calling for this type of disclosure back in late 2009.

The federal government says it will continue to post new financial information online over the coming weeks as it comes in from First Nations.

One of the first bands to report the salaries of its elected officials, the White Bear First Nation, reports that Chief Brian Standingready earned $88,351 in salary and benefits in the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2014.
